Maui Itinerary: How Many Days Do You Need?

Flying over from Oahu and trying to figure out how long to spend in Maui? Here’s a quick guide to help you decide — and links to our detailed day-by-day itineraries.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Maui?

Maui is Hawaii’s second-largest island, and there’s genuinely a lot to see. Unlike Oahu, where you can cover the highlights in 2–3 days, Maui rewards a slower pace. The island’s top experiences — Road to Hana, Haleakala sunrise, Molokini snorkeling, and West Maui’s beaches — are spread across the island and each deserves a full day on its own.

Here’s the honest breakdown:

3 Days — Short but doable. You can hit the Road to Hana, a great beach day with snorkeling, and Molokini Crater. You’ll feel a little rushed but won’t regret the trip.

5 Days — The sweet spot for most visitors. You get everything in the 3-day plan plus Haleakala sunrise and a dedicated South Maui beach day. Enough time to actually relax.

7 Days — The full Maui experience. Adds a day trip to Lanai, more beach time, a helicopter tour option, and a genuinely unhurried pace. If you can swing it, a week is the way to go.

Before You Book Anything

A few things sell out fast and should be booked the moment your trip is confirmed:

  • Haleakala Sunrise Permit — Book at recreation.gov. Sells out weeks or months ahead.
  • Waianapanapa State Park (black sand beach on Road to Hana) — Reservations required at gostateparks.hawaii.gov
  • Molokini Snorkel Tour — Morning spots fill up fast in peak season
  • Rental Car — Maui has a well-documented car shortage. Book early.
